What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

A pelvic floor examination begins just like any other PT exam. A thorough history is taken and then an external movement analysis is performed. This analysis can give a lot of insight regarding what might be happening at the pelvic floor. It also can reveal postural issues, spinal restrictions, breathing patterns, resting and active positions of the pelvis, and whether or not areas of weakness or restrictions may be present along the thoracic, lumbopelvic, abdominal, and/or hip regions.

An internal pelvic floor assessment may be recommended during this appointment, but only with your consent. You are more than welcome to have a 2nd person in the room with you during your appointments if desired. Internal assessments can be performed vaginally or rectally, in multiple different positions aside from being on your back. Dynamic movements can also be performed during an internal assessment. We promise it is NOT as uncomfortable or as awkward as you think it might be.

Before an internal exam, we explain what we will be doing, what we will be looking for, and what it should feel like. There are no stirrups, speculums, or use of a head lamp. Instead, it involves the insertion of 1 finger that is gloved and lubricated. During the internal exam, we assess for signs of prolapse, scar tissue, muscle integrity, muscle function, coordination, mobility, and any areas of pain or sensitivity. All of these things lead to a comprehensive evaluation and ultimately your individualized plan of care in order to help you reach YOUR goals. We will discuss the estimated number of visits and time frame for length of care during your initial assessment.
